On December 23, 1965, Timothy Leary was arrested for marijuana possession. On March 11, 1966 he was convicted of possession under the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 and sentenced to 30 years in prison, fined $30,000, and ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment. On June 10, 1966, Janis Joplin made her debut with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Her second appearance with the band was on June 19, 1966 at the St. Francis Hotel where they performed for a Tim Leary Benefit to help with his legal bills.This is the handbill for that event.
