Addressed to Carol Tinker, 250 Scott S.F. 94117 Postmarked Apr 5, 1967“In 1965 the issue facing HANC most squarely was the proposed Panhandle Freeway. By 1966 the freeway and the changing social conditions began to share the neighborhood spotlight. More recently, the neighborhood has become a kind of symbol – to some a symbol of a kind of desirable youthful anarchy and to others a symbol of something undesirable. Philosophers will point6 with pride while others view the mannerism of the newly arrived with alarm. It may well be that the HANC Board’s insistence on first getting the facts through a series of monthly interview and then determining a course of action may have to be qualified. Board members last month decided to explore the problems of “neighborhood co-existence” a get more in depth , Though the concern is not precisely a reaction to the threat of possible redevelopment, it is related. The opinion has been voiced, for instance, that an increasing number of health department condemnation actions could tend to encourage advocates of extensive urban renewal programs. We may have more to report next month. The monthly meeting will be addressed by the City’s No. 1 building inspector and all segments of our diverse and increasingly lively neighborhood are urged to attend, ask and exchange views.” First mention of the (HIP) Haight Independent Proprietors: “This group includes home artisans and craftsmen as well as the new community business establishments. Their projects include among others the sponsorship of the HIP Job Co-op (if you need help, or want work call 621-0941); monthly Sunday morning Haight Street clean-up, and an attempt to improve relations with the police (meetings with Police Chief recommending use of term “peace officer” instead of “policeman”, etc.).
